Is Your Website Boring?

by Unknown Webmaster on June 24, 2009

This article takes a look at some examples of examples of how to make things more interesting and give you some advice on how to incorporate it on your website, so people stay longer and have a bigger chance of buying what you sell.

When tiger (don’t ask) I came across an interesting article and video from Forbes where they test a laptops durability by letting a tiger use it as a chewtoy.

Click the video to play, there are 20 seconds of commercials before the real video – See the big version at Forbes.

Why Should You Care?

If you run a website or are selling a product you are basically telling people stories, and if you want to be successful, you’d better make sure that your story is interesting. If you don’t, people will get board and leave the site before they have a chance to click an ad or buy anything.

Some people are looking for stuff like “Carbon Poker Bonus Code !!!!”, and you can make a bunch of money by handing out your bonus code to those people, and there are nothing wrong with that (provided that the pokerroom is cool with it). However people will forget about you the second they leave the site. I don’t need an indestructible laptop, but if I some day do, I’ll jump onto Google and look for the one that worked after an elephant stood on, since it will be the only one I remember hearing about.

So, Pictures of 2 Headed Babies Are Good?

You have to walk a fine line between being professional and getting your visitors to trust you and paying people to tattoo your URL on their forehead andrun around naked with a rubber chicken strapped to their crotch. But you should always be thinking about how you can be more interesting.

How To Be An Interesting Poker Affiliate

There are many ways that you can slip a little bit of Dave’s Insanity Sauce into your articles without making them unprofessional.

  • Pictures – They don’t have be relevant, you can use them to set the mood and generally add some life to a page. Copyblogger is a good example of this.
  • Graphs – Numbers are boring, graphs can be interesting and will at least break the wall of text.
  • Tell a story – Tell people what you (personally) like about a pokerroom or about your friend/mother/girlfriend/dog think about it. Or tell a story about someone else, like Chris Ferguson building a 10.000$ bankroll from nothing on Full Tilt Poker.
  • Talk directly to the reader – Write “you” instead of “someone” or “most people”.
  • Show people the benefits – Nobody wants to read about Party Poker, they want to know how having a Party Poker account will let them win money and spend it on strippers/flowers for their wife and live a happy life.

The above is just a examples of how you can make your website more interesting. Some of them may not apply to your site, and you should not make any changes if it doesn’t “fit in” on your site

You make solid points but they all seem to go against my selfless goal of boring people to death as a form of population control.
