This Will Freak You Out: WhatTheInternetKnowsAboutYou.com

Blackhat

There is no moral to this post – I just want to share some cool links and whitepapers.

A little while ago “some people” got slightly annoyed that Google has started offering encrypted search. What this means to you is that your analytics software have no way of seeing where the visitors are coming from, if they used the encrypted search.

In related news Google has just released a browser plugin that let people out out of being tracked by Google Analytics – This didn’t go over well with “those people” either.

But fear not!

There are plenty of other ways to tickle your stalker bone :-)

Visitor Stalking is Still Going Strong

This site demonstrates a way for webmasters to grab web history data from visitors: http://whattheinternetknowsaboutyou.com/

It is way more sexy than it sounds, and obviously evil – and I’m not talking about the good kind of evil.

How it works: http://w2spconf.com/2010/papers/p26.pdf

If you found the above interesting have a look at this article about browser fingerprinting and check out the demo.

There is also a nice little whitepaper about fingerprinting: https://panopticlick.eff.org/browser-uniqueness.pdf

For those of you, who have reached the end of my ramblings, I’v got a little present: Free tagless tracking with Google Analytics.
