Are you in the habit of giving other people unsolicited advice?
If you are, you may be a constant nuisance to the people you are “helping out”.
Trying to Help
Many webmasters leave parts of their site “just good enough”, since they don’t have enough time to make everything perfect.
If you come in and start pointing out all the tiny flaws on their website, basically telling them how to do their work, they are left with some uncomfortable choices:
- Ignore you, and risk offending you..
- Explain why they are leaving things half done i.e. spend their valuable time talking to you.
- Thank you for your feedback, and risk getting more of it.
I think of unsolicited advice as the digital equivalent of telling a kid to eat more spinach – Most kids don’t like that, even though it may be good for them.
What to Do…
It is easy to learn how to stop annoying people with your “advice”.
All you have to do, is to imagine that you were the other person (remember that most people are busy).
If the other person would truly appreciate your feedback, go ahead and share it with them.
Remember There is a big difference between liking something and being supposed to like it.
Did you like being told to take your vitamins when you were a kid?
You can’t force someone to take their digital vitamins
